Radiology is a subspecialty in the field of medicine that is concerned with the use of imaging technologies to detect and diagnose medical conditions in the body. Medical professionals who specialize in this field are referred to as radiologists. Some of the techniques that radiologists use to do their work include Pistron Emission Tomography (PET), ultrasound, x-ray, CT scan, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These techniques are performed used different pieces of equipment among them being the c arm. Here are facts regarding C arm x ray.

A c arm machine is based on x-ray technology. It is used in minimally invasive surgery and in diagnostic imaging. The system is used in visualizing several body processes, including cardiac surgery, gastroenterology, and thoracic/abdominal aortic aneurysm repair. Other procedures it finds use in include percutaneous replacements, neuro simulation, neurology procedures, orthopedics and vascular surgery among others.

Globally and in the United States, there are few companies that are involved in making these devices. These companies include Siemens, Philips, GE Healthcare/OEC, and Ziehm Imaging. These are US manufacturers. Other notable manufacturers outside the US are Shimadzu, Orthoscan, Hologic, and Hitachi. Manufacturers in the US are global leaders in this industry as well as leaders in Europe and specific parts of the world.

Medical imaging as a field has been undergoing a lot of advancements in technology. Newer and superior technology has been used to replace some old components that were in use in some devices. For example, image processing in newer models has been enhanced by the inclusion of better software for image processing and 3D navigation aids. The image quality has been increased by these advancements on a significant scale.

As a result of technological improvement, the radiation dose which is delivered to patients has been reduced enormously over the years. If one gets exposed to large doses of X-ray radiation, it can be very harmful. In the same way, if one is exposed to the radiation for a long duration of time, they can be affected negatively. One of the bad effects of X-rays is cancer. For one to be safe, number and dosage of exposure should be kept to the minimum.

Image intensifiers used to dominate in old models of c arms. However, that changed with the introduction of flat-panel systems. Flat-panel systems are much better because they offer much better image quality. They also allow for the design of smaller systems that take much less physical space in the operating room. The field of view is also larger in flat-panel systems as compared to image intensifiers.

Ziehm Imaging is credited with inventing flat-panel systems when it released its Vision FD flat-panel mobile c arm. Philips would later in 2009 follow suit by releasing its Veradius system. At the moment, most manufacturers of these systems use flat-panel technology. The many advantages that are associated with flat-panel technology make it important to have in an operating room.

There are various forms and configurations of the c arm. For instance, some are moveable while others are the operating room. Cost reduction, increased accessibility, and enhanced mobility are some of the benefits that are presented by many mini versions of these machines that many manufacturers have introduced.
