A Door County Bike Tour Is A Great Vacation Idea

Most people are only lucky enough to get one vacation a year unless they are retired or independently wealthy. For that reason they generally plan those vacations very carefully, mapping exactly where they will stay, what they will see, and where they will go. Taking a Door County bike tour is no different. There are many things to think about and decide before you start off on such an adventure.

One of the most obvious considerations you have to take into account is the weather. Wisconsin is, after all, one of the country's northernmost states and the weather is not conducive to extensive cycling all year round. The middle of the summer seems like the ideal time for this type of trip. The temperatures should be fairly mild, not too cold and not too warm. Parks and recreation areas will be open for business and should be fully accessible.

You might want to start your tour in Sturgeon Bay, a charming town with plenty of history, art galleries, a maritime museum and great shoreline where you can cycle, fish, tramp the hiking trails, or just rest and relax. It could become your home base as you bicycle through the other parts of the county.

Bailey's Harbor is an invigorating bike ride just north of Egg Harbor. The famous Cana Island lighthouse is here and is open to visitors who want to climb the spiral staircase to check out the amazing views of Lake Michigan and Door Peninsula. It can be wet going however, and sometimes water boots become necessary.

While you are visiting Bailey's Harbor you should check out Kangaroo Lake. It is the largest lake in Door County and the views are incredible. If you want to explore the preserves however, you should be aware that there are no restrooms, trash cans, or water available. The area is carefully preserved and a wonderful place to photograph the extensive wildlife. You may even want to stay for the night at one of the housekeeping cottages.

Once you are on the northern end of the peninsula, Newport State Park is a must see. It is located at Ellison's Bay on the very tip of Door. Being the only park in Wisconsin that is officially wilderness designated makes this a very special visit. You can go off road cycling on any number of trails, but you need to find out in advance which ones are accessible to bikes.

No tour of this area would be complete without a cherry picking session and the middle of summer is the perfect time for it. There are plenty of orchards happy to provide you with the equipment you will need to gather as many cherries as you want. If you decide to take your trip a little earlier in the year, you will be amazed by the beauty of the blossoming trees.

Touring this magnificent part on the United State is a great idea, and cycling your way around is a wonderful way to do it. It may just make you decide to come back again and again.
