Mythology Books For Teens: A Brief Guide

Stories about the past fall into two major groups; myths and legends. Myths are set in a remote past, probably in a different world while legends are set in a recent past in the world of today. Both of them are considered real stories. Mythology books for teens comprise of a variety of myths from different cultures and civilizations in the world.

Since mythology literature represents a form of story-telling in such a way that people can relate, it becomes excellent reading material for teenagers. They are able to relate to people or events in these stories and learn from experiences of characters. Although the setting is in the past, human relationships and interactions remain the same today as they used to be. As a result, these stories are a secure environment for people to learn.

Most mythology books constitute stories from either one or many different parts of the world. The stories comprise of human interactions and relationships such as love, marriage, war and work. Additionally, most of them have extraordinary people in the form of heroes and heroines who did good work for the society. They also include the norm of behaviour and culture of the community.

Myths were not written down when they were first told. The creators told other people who told other people until the story came down to the generations that were able to read and write. As a result, there are bound to several stories describing the same people or event. As the story was handed generation to generation, some minor aspects changed or were exaggerated. In most stories, however, the significant aspects remain the same.

There are hundreds of cultures in the world, and most of them have their own legends and myths. Each story is particular and unique to each culture. It emphasizes their values, norms, and customs. In the past, when stories were told it was to entertain, inspire and give hope to people under certain circumstances. Egypt and Greece represent the cultures/civilizations with some of the greatest stories ever told.

Stories from Greece are dominated by numerous heroic acts of their people, gods, goddesses and important cities and event. They tell the tales of this mighty city of Sparta and the magnificent Athens. Teenagers reading this literature will also learn of the great gods and goddesses such as Zeus and Athena. There are many other deities in the Greece culture, one for an essential aspect of their lives such as beauty, fertility, agriculture, war, and love.

Greek mythology also encompasses a great number of interesting people such as Helen of Troy, Achilles, Themistocles, and Xerxes. Egyptian myths may be a little different from Greek owing to the different culture but are equally intriguing and entertaining to read for any teenager. The stories of the Pharaohs, the pyramids, their gods, and heroes are also informative.

Adults, children, and teenagers alike will find myths intriguing and entertaining. Although most of them have been adapted into films, reading is still the best way to connect with these stories. Most of these books are available online at a low price.
