How A Disaster Survival Kit Can Help

Emergencies could take place anywhere and any time. Natural disasters are common and may result in destruction, damage and death. Usually limited resources are available in these situations, so a disaster survival kit is recommended. These are meant to include the basic necessities of survival in emergencies.

Individuals and families must prepare these ahead of the emergency. The need for survival kits could be present at any moment and is often unpredictable. When emergency evacuations are in place, people need to be able to grab essentials fast. There is usually no time for shopping or searching for goods. When these events happen, especially natural disasters, people must be able to survive on their own. They will be their sole provider of food, water and similar necessities. It is importune that people pack enough to keep them alive for about three days, although they may have to survive on their own for a longer period.

Local officials and relief workers will attempt to be at the scene to help, but it might be impossible to reach everybody in a timely manner. In other words, it can take hours to days for help to arrive. This is important to understand when making a kit. Likewise, water, electricity, gas and sewage are unlikely to be available in these cases. The kit should include items that can help people survive under such conditions.

Survival kits must be maintained after they are built. They should be safe to use when they are needed and equipped with everything that is needed. Canned food should be stored in a dry and cool place. Boxed food should be stored in metal or plastic containers that are sealed to extend shelf life and keep pests out. Foods that are packed should not go bad and should be replaced if they do.

Water supplies, as well as store food, are to be switched out twice per year. Make sure to make note of the date on the containers that include the supplies. Reconsidering contents of these kits each year is important. Changes may be necessary to update them each year. Make use of airtight plastic bags for storage and place the kit in a container that is easy to transport, such as a backpack or trashcan.

It is recommended that people have one of these at their work, home and in their vehicle. This is essential because it can be difficult to predict when there is a disaster and the kit may be needed. The ones at home should feature food, water and supplies that will last a minimum of three days. This should be placed in an area everyone knows that is easy to access in evacuation situations.

Kits for work should offer enough to last a minimum of 25 hours. These are usually filled with water, food, medications and other major necessities. It is recommended that people pack comfortable shoes in the event they need to travel or walk long distances. These should also be in containers or bags that can be accessed quickly and easily. Vehicle survival kits may feature first aid kit, radio, sleeping bags, ice scraper, blankets, extra batteries, water, food, warm clothes, shovel and flashlights.

Not all of these packages will be the same. Although there are many retailers and manufacturers who offer starter kits featuring the basics. Nonetheless, it is best when people customize or create their own.
