When it comes to heating your home there are many different options for the fuel that you use. The main fuel types that you can choose from are Oil, Electric, Natural Gas, Propane, and Coal-based solid fuels, and LPG (liquefied petroleum gas). To better understand your options we'll go into the pros and cons of each.

One of the best things you can do in the winter to conserve energy is to set your thermostat to a low temperature at which you are still comfortable. Keeping it at about 68 degrees when you are awake and lowering it when you go to sleep is a great tool for efficiency. With a programmable thermostat you can adjust the temperature of your home automatically.

Wood burning fireplaces require consistent amounts of wood in order for them to continue operating at an optimal level. You might have a hookup and get your firewood for free, but the chances are slim if you're living in a city area. Rural area people are closer to trees and people that have properties where they harvest massive amounts of firewood. Electronic fireplaces are fed through gas or electronic sources, which means you will never have to mess with them. Granted, your regular utility bills will increase exponentially the longer you use your electronic fireplace. You have to find an electronic fireplace that uses energy in the most conservative fashion possible. You also need to regulate the amount of time you spend using your fireplace.

This is the most popular gas used in homes across the United States and it has become the cheapest option over time. It now costs half the costs of oil costing an average of $1,024 for a normal household in a year. The supply is large so the price will stay low over the next couple decades. The only issue with natural gas is that you need to be within a natural gas network.

You should also check your ducts for leaks and clean your heat registers. IF these registers are currently blocked by furniture or other items, you should remove those items to increase efficiency. Be careful to only use your exhaust fans when they are necessary so you can avoid wasting money and heat, by throwing it literally out of your house.

So if you are considering installing a furnace or a different heating format weigh the pros and cons of each option and see what is available in your area. The best bet would be natural gas but it really is up to you.
