Despite The Problems With Public Education, It Is Important

There is a lot of debate going on in the media, among parents, and among professional educators, about the value and the effectiveness of public schools. Some people believe that these schools are inferior to private schools, or that they can give their children better schooling at home. Charter schools complicate the process even further, because they receive public funding but are operated by independent parties. Despite the problems with public education, there are many reasons why it is important to maintain its availability and its quality.

If you speak to five different parents and five different teachers about this issue, you will get ten different opinions. This often goes according to where they work and where they send their kids. For instance, teachers who work in state-run schools are often opposed to charter schools, and vice-versa.

There are definitely a lot of complications and gray ares regarding this issue. School quality varies according to the individual school, regardless of whether it is public, charter, or private.

However, there are a few extremely important reasons that state-run schools need to be available and that their quality needs to be a priority. These issues have to do with accessibility and availability. All children need to be provided with good, viable options for schooling, and state-run schools have historically made this possible.

1. There should always be free options for schooling. One of the reasons why private schools can offer smaller class sizes and more up to date technology is that they charge tuition and often receive sizable private donations. This is great for the families that can afford to pay tuition, but what about those that cannot pay it, and do not have the connections to get their children admitted to private school? Charter schools are a free alternative, but they are not always conveniently located.

2. Location. This brings us to the issue of location. Some families may not be able to provide their own transportation. It is important for children to have a school located within their neighborhood, one that they can easily access by walking or by a short bus ride. Historically, state-run schools have filled this need.

3. Socialization. State-run schools ensure that children are able to interact with other children in their area, and learn what it means to be part of a community. Private schools can provide a sense of community, too, but it often centers around a particular agenda, often a religious one. At their best, public schools provide an environment where children can interact with others from diverse backgrounds and can learn to respect that diversity.

School choice is a complicated and multifaceted issue. Each family must make the choice that is best for their individual child or children. However, making quality education accessible to all is a responsibility that we as a society share. Regardless of the problems with public education, this is the purpose for which it was designed. We need to make sure it is maintained so that it can fulfill that purpose.
