Various Techniques People Use When Constructing A Geodesic Dome Greenhouse

It is a basic fact that many people love to grow their own vegetable garden. There are few things like planting some seeds in the dirt and months later reaping the many rewards of your difficult labor. In many colder climates people are beginning to rediscover the many benefits of building greenhouses to basically prolong their growing season. Understanding the various construction techniques used for building geodesic dome greenhouse kits can be advantageous if you try raising a vegetable garden this way.

After deciding to build one generally the next question is about how do I do it and what materials are used. There is no real simple answer to those questions. There are many different ways people have worked out that range from very inexpensive materials that go up in a day's time to more expensive materials that take longer. There are even prefabricated models that you can buy on the net that have everything cut and marked for you.

Some people prefer the cheaper flattened conduit method. Generally this is the easiest type to build. You flatten the outside ends on metal tubing you have bought at a store. You then drill holes at the ends to screw a long bolt through before bending it slightly. After building it cover the entire structure with plastic that is light weight. These domes often go up in less then a day.

Some use the hub and tube method. Using this rather than bolting all your flattened pipes together you use a larger pipe with several holes drilled inside it. Your studs are carefully bolted to it rather than each other. Finally light weight plastic is then used to cover it. This type is typically stronger while still being inexpensively priced.

Some people like the beam and hub method. This is more complex and expensive because it uses specially cut beams and hubs that are connected to form a framework for the dome. Permanent domes are generally constructed this way.

A more expensive way to go is the pre-made paneled timber and frame method. This is typically the method most prefab stores use that people find surfing the net. This method uses mostly pre-cut wooden timbers which are made to smoothly connect along all the edges. They also have an outside material used on them to reinforce them and make them stronger.

One of the longest lasting and strongest forms is called the monolithic dome. These have been known to out live many house built next to them. They are generally built with layers of concrete sprayed over balloon forms. They use sprayed polyurethane foam on their interior to help insulate and water proof them. After it all dries all the windows and doors are installed in them.

You do not always have to use only one technique when building your geodesic dome greenhouse. When you understand how each method is used this opens the possibilities of combining parts from each type to make something that will work for you. Remember they are not only for greenhouses, they also make good sun rooms to relax inside.
