Summer time! The beach offers so many photographic opportunities, especially for portraits. Lets have a look at some ways to get some great photos and enjoy the experience.

There is a problem with shooting on the beach; contrast. When one area of your photo seems just right the other part is too dark or too bright. This is an annoying aspect of shooting. However, it is one we can overcome with some careful planning.

Too many bright areas and too many parts in shadow can really diminish your spirits. It's much better to have lighting evenly spread right through your photographs. In fact "evenness" in light calculation and observation is one of the important aspects in photography. It's vital to know what your light is doing and where it's going.

The thing to aim for is an even distribution of light across your photo. You want the persons face and the environment behind them to be correctly exposed for the goal you are trying to achieve. In fact "evenness" in light calculation and inspection is one of the important factors in photography. It's essential to know what your lighting is doing and where it's going.

Making use of another lighting source is an effective way to get more lighting onto your person. You can use a medium sized reflector to bounce the lighting back onto their face. Gold reflectors look complementary at dusk or sunrise. You can simply bounce the already golden light back onto the persons face, producing a beautiful gold hue throughout the photo.

If using the sun doesn't work then try using another source of light. Try using a medium sized reflector to throw the sunlight back onto their face. Gold reflectors look well suited at early evening or the break of day. You can simply throw the already golden light back onto the subject's face, creating a beautiful gold hue throughout the photo.

Using fill flash is also another great plan. You can simply turn the person towards the sunlight and photograph with the flash in auto. The flash unit will examine the light reflected from the scene and alter the brightness. When you take the shot the flash light will discharge. It then fills in all the shadows on the face producing evenness of light.

Beach photography is a lot of fun, particularly when you are photographing friends or family. It's crucial to watch what your light is doing; brightness/intensity, contrast, evenness/unevenness, shadows, colour/temperature and direction/angle. Observing these things will be a great start for your image making in the years to come.
