Useful Information Regarding Gator Hunts

Large reptiles such as alligators are very dangerous animals. These big reptiles often exist as apex predators within their habitats in most cases. This means that they grow in population without danger of being predated upon by other animals that share the same habitat. When alligator population growth is so huge, they may start to cause disruption to human existence and that can be very dangerous. This is worth knowing about Gator hunts.

States like Florida and Texas in the US where alligators exist in in huge numbers are faced with a major danger from the animals. Alligators stray into properties scaring people and attacking pets. In the morning, it is not uncommon to wake to a huge alligator on the stairs basking comfortably. Usually, when this happens, people call animal control department so that they can remove the gator.

However, calling animal control department to remove straying alligators may not be sufficient. In fact, this is only a temporary fix to the situation and a more permanent solution is needed. That is why harvesting of gators is allowed in most states where these animals exist in large numbers. Members of the public are invited to participate in a hunting spree that exists between one and two months every year.

States like Texas, South Carolina, North Carolina, Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, and Georgia allow gator hunting every year. The states provide citizens with licenses. Gator population is likely to reduce significantly and even result into extinction if people are allowed to hunt without regulation of any kind. Strict laws are there to prevent overhunting and subsequent extinction of gators.

At a certain time, gator population in the United States became very high. The gators posed a lot of threat to the people as they were invading homes and causing injuries to residents. In some cases, the gators killed people. The US government permitted citizens to hunt them without regulation. Due to this, extreme hunting was done which reduced the gator population to almost extinction. With the unregulated hunting, it took a short time for the gators to be eliminated.

Following the significant reduction in the number of gators, the US government banned any form of hunting activities against gators in order to restore their populations. The good thing about gators is that they are a sustainable resource. This means that their population can always be restored if they are given enough time. This ability to restore populations is contributed to by the fact that they are apex predators.

Gator populations soon came back up within no time and regulated hunting was introduced. Restricting the legal hunting time frame to 1 or 2 months in a year is one way of achieving regulation. Everybody can not engage in this activity. Only individuals with licenses are allowed to hunt gators legally. It is against the law to hunt without a license.

Bias in distribution of licenses is prevented using certain methods. During a specific hunting season, license holders are allowed to hunt a specific number of alligators only. Hunting can be done using different methods. The use of gig and snare, bow and arrow, hook and line, and firearms are among the methods used.
