Benefits Of Selecting Log Home Siding Versus A Stacked Full Log House

A lot of people love the rustic look of wood cabins. Most do not want to live like their ancestors however, and would only consider living in that kind of house if it came with all the modern amenities. If you are planning to build, and want to replicate the look of a wood cabin, there are a couple of ways you can do it. You can opt for full logs inside and out, or you can choose log home siding.

Before choosing you should consider the benefits cladding will give you. One of them is freedom of maintenance. Shifting and settling is what most stacked log houses will eventually do. This will not happen with log cladding. These homes are of conventional construction. When they are properly built, they will neither shift nor settle. Full log houses sometimes have to be completely raised off their foundations to correct settling issues.

Drying out full logs completely is extremely difficult. That can leave you with the problem of expansion and shrinkage during the coldest, warmest, and wettest times of the year. With cladding you don't have these issues. You also don't have to worry about chinking when you choose wood cladding. Full log homes require it to help keep the outside air where it belongs. Cracking, chipping, and wearing may occur. This has to be checked regularly and corrected promptly.

If you want to keep construction costs down, homes with log cladding are the best option. They are wired and framed conventionally, which is the most economical way to build this type of house. It also makes it easy to wire and plumb between interior and exterior walls. You don't need a crew of specialized construction workers for conventionally built houses in the same way that stacked log construction requires.

For those who want exterior design flexibility, cladding is the better option. These homes can be built exactly to your specifications. Stacked log homes are less versatile. Even the size of doors and windows may be limited without the services of an experienced structural engineer. All of these factors, including difficulty of wiring and plumbing and design constraints for full log homes, adds significantly to the overall cost.

If you want wood design on the interior of your house as well as outside, full log construction is a good option. You aren't limited to that however if you go with wood cladding. You have the option of hanging drywall and creating a modern interior space that compares and contrasts to the rugged wooden exterior.

Wood cladded homes are energy efficient. In fact, they one of the most energy efficient styles on the market today. It would be difficult to construct stacked log homes as air tight as the conventionally framed system without as great deal of added expense.

You don't have to live like a pioneer to reside in a home that blends with its natural surroundings. You can have a beautiful, rustic cabin or estate, without resorting to stacked logs. Siding is a more convenient, energy efficient, and cost effective choice.
