Humans have always enjoyed hunting. From the days of hunters and gatherers and crude weapons to the modern era of sophisticated tools, hunting has always been important. While ancient humans did it to keep themselves from starving, modern hunters do it as a hobby. If you are a bushman at heart, you should try ocellated turkey hunts.

Hunters are active during spring and fall, but each state will have its regulations regarding this activity. Consider gathering relevant information relating to bird hunting in your state. When spring comes back around, it is time to start harvesting some male birds, also referred to as gobblers. At this time, the birds are mating. Fall is when you will enjoy shooting both females and males. Do not confuse wild turkey with the ocellated species, the later looks like the former but only lives in a limited number of locations around the world.

Since you will be firing some shots, you need to have a suitable gun. A shotgun is one of the most suitable options. In some places, the authorities have no problem if you choose to use a rifle that is of low caliber. Things have been changing, and today, some enthusiasts choose to use arrows. Use whatever works for you, within the specified rules.

These birds are known to have excellent eyesight. That is why you will need to use some form of camouflage. You will have to cover yourself from head to toe. Well before the season starts, gather all the items you will need. You will need a mask, pants, gloves, boots, and a hat. Additionally, organize to have a turkey vest having room for carrying calls and dead birds.

You need to know something about calls used in hunting. Calls can either be air or friction calls. Friction calls include push and pin calls, pot and pet calls, scratch boxes, and box calls. Air calls include snuff tube calls, diaphragms, trumpet calls, and Turpin yelps. Both beginners and experienced hunters find using the calls easy.

Locator calls are a must when hunting these birds. Owl hooters, Crow calls, hawk calls plus any other loud call help you a lot during the hunt. Locator calls shock the fowls to gobble, and one can have it easy locating them and gathering your harvest.

Decide where the game will be harvested. Put on the clothing items mentioned earlier, have your gun or another tool ready, and you are all set. Once out there in woods, start making the calls. Keep doing this until the birds start emerging into view. Once you are pointing your arrow or gun at the side of the head of the animal, shoot. Aiming at the head lets you accomplish the task fast.

If you want a memorable event, invite your friends. Enjoy a camaraderie only true hunters can experience. You can use this opportunity to take your friendship to the next level. Hunting is a fun-filled game, and always will be.
