Being seriously overweight is fast becoming one of the biggest health threats in the world Obese and overweight people are much more susceptible to diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and cancer. They often do not lead fulfilling lives because they struggle to walk and many sufferers experience continual pain. There are numerous diets but they do not work for everyone. When considering weight loss surgery Alabama citizens need to understand that this is a serious step.

Because bariatric procedures are serious surgical intervention, surgeons require their patients to agree to a lengthy preparation period. During this period they have to make drastic changes in their lifestyles and if they do not meet the many criteria set by the surgeon, they will not be eligible for the procedure. Many prospective patients fail to make the changes that they are required to make.

One of the most important changes that prospective patients must make is to develop a burning desire to not only lose weight, but to permanently adopt an alternative lifestyle that will help to make sure that the weight is not gained again. Many patients find it difficult to change their habits to maintain a very high level of motivation and to make the sacrifices that they are required to make.

Many patients say that the most difficult change that they had to make was to stop using any nicotine products and alcohol. No reputable surgeon will take on a patient that has not stopped smoking for at least six months. This is because smokers are very likely to develop blood clots and other potentially dangerous complications after the operation. Alcohol causes fluctuation in the blood sugar levels and is also a taboo.

t goes without saying that patients will be required to change their diet. They will have to follow a balanced eating program that includes protein at every meal but that also severely limit the amount of sugar, salt and caffeine that they consume. For many patients this is an ordeal. It is necessary, however, because the goal is not just to get rid of excess fat but to make sure that it is never gained again.

Exercise is also very important. Patients must adopt a strict exercise regime that focuses on low impact activities such as swimming, walking and cycling. Apart from the obvious health benefits, exercise also increase the serotonin levels which create a feel goof feeling and that definitely help patients to remain positive and to adopt a new way of living their lives.

Patients need to accept the fact that the weeks following their procedure will be difficult. They will have to deal with severe bruising and they will find it difficult to walk and to bend. They will not be able to eat any solid foods for at least two weeks. These are temporary setbacks, however, and within a few weeks they will be able to enjoy the many benefits of a life without excess fat.

Bariatric procedures are drastic and patients are selected very carefully. Those that prove to be highly motivated can, however, look forward to a new lease on life. Obese people face many difficulties, not just heath related problems but also life style restrictions.
