Liposuction is a fairly common cosmetic procedure. It involves the removal of fat from specific areas of the body so as to achieve a more appealing shape. Such areas may include the buttocks, the thighs, the anterior abdomen and even the face. The demand for this type of surgery has been on the rise in recent times. If they intend to benefit from liposuction Michigan residents need to have some important information beforehand.

It should be emphasized that liposuction is not an ideal option of weight loss. This is mainly because the fat lost in this instance is only in a few places in the body whereas beneficial weight loss should occur uniformly in all parts of the body. Persons who wish to lose fat are advised to stick with the traditional approaches of dietary modification and regular engagement in physical exercise.

One of the things that are considered for persons undergoing the procedure is the body mass index (or BMI). The persons that are likely to benefit most from the procedure are those with a BMI of 40 or more. This should, however, not be taken as an exclusion criteria. Patients that may potentially benefit from this procedure regardless of BMI include those with weight related conditions such as sleep apnea, diabetes and hypertension.

When you make the decision to have this procedure, you need to undergo some preparation. Among the things to be done is an explanation of what this surgery entail to the patient. The patient needs to understand the benefits and risks before making their independent decision. The patient is then subjected to various blood tests aimed at ensuring that they are ready to undergo the procedure.

Just is common for many types of surgery, anesthesia is required for this operation. Either general anesthesia or regional anesthesia is used depending on the size of the area to be operated on. Multiple and large areas usually require that general anesthesia be used because the duration of the operation is usually longer. A small surgical incision is usually made in the area of interest to access the fat layer.

A high frequency vibrator is usually used to break down the fat in the region of interest. This is also referred to as lipolysis. Once broken down, the fat is removed from the region under a suction machine. For a single operation, the amount of fat that is removed should not exceed 3 liters. If there is need to have a lot more removed, then additional removal is done during subsequent operations.

When regional anesthesia is used, patients recover in record time and can be allowed home on the same day. When the general anesthesia is used, on the other hand, the patient has to be retained in the hospital for about 24 hours to monitor them for possible complications. Return to daily routine is usually immediate except in instances where complications occur.

Complications resulting from this procedure are few and quite rare in the hands of a skilled surgeon. Note that the risk of getting complications increases with an increasing number of procedures and increasing surface area. Commonly encountered complications include, among others, excessive loss of blood, bruising, wound infections and scar formation. Infections are usually controlled through the administration of antibiotics. Consult your doctor immediately if you notice pus oozing from the wounds.
