Street rods are old cars with large modified engines for velocity purposes. The concept is of an American origin. These rods were designed from light vehicles such as the roadsters because they were easy to adjust. Roadsters were also inexpensive. The process of building a street rod chassis is not a complicated one. Any person with enough knowledge on cars and related equipment can easily handle this task. The job can conveniently be carried out in a garage or at the backyard.

The main necessity during this activity is an old car. The entire construction process can be carried out in a garage or backyard depending on convenience. Old cars can be gotten from the junkyard. Just make sure the chosen vehicle is in a good shape and rust free as well. Rusted vehicles cannot be used for this activity. Chryslers, Chevrolet and Ford cars are the usual options for this procedure. You can also save yourself the trouble of running through junkyards by visiting rodding websites.

All Hot rod construction ventures must begin from scratch. The person will therefore, have to disassemble this old vehicle down to the last bit. Things such as the seats, fixtures and other accessories must be removed first so that one remains only with the frame. This will be part of the rebuilding process since the vehicle is old anyway. Empty the task tank of any gasoline.

Determine the size of frame that will be required for your project. Measure and take mark of the points where you would want the axles and wheels to fit. Use a reciprocating saw to cut the various measurements as desired. Many people prefer a shorter posterior end for an enhanced look. Parts such as the hoods and roof should be gotten rid of since they will not be of use.

Apart from stripping down old vehicles for a frame, the person can also decide to put together a customized one. This can be done using rectangular steel tubing. This tubing should be welded into a ladder like structure that will function as rod frame. Be as resourceful, innovative and creative as possible to avoid spending much on this venture. Once again, the junkyard will prove very resourceful for this activity.

The suspension, shocks and axles systems have to be new. Purchase these items from known and trusted dealers. This will be like creating a hybrid vehicle that incorporates old and new systems. Coil springs, AMC Pacers and other suspension kits should be installed as well. Auto part dealerships will provide you will various options for these parts.

There are no rules governing rat rod construction, the person can therefore be as creative as one pleases. Many people rush for that new engine as to give their device optimum performance capabilities. However, an old engine will work just as fine. Just make sure to rebuild it into good shape.

Once the engine is in shape, your rod is almost ready to run. For the safety of whoever will be driving this device, be sure to install brakes and tires. This rod must have a seat as well. One can cut up a couch for this purpose. For a sense of style, install a windshield, rear and side view mirrors. In addition to that, paint the body too.
