This week the news that hit the headlines sometimes back about black deaths in South Carolina has been brought to rest. South Carolina has forty-seven percent of its population being the black people, but the irony is that eighty percent of people in the police department are white. The killings of unarmed African Americans bring out the memories of some of the atrocities that have been committed against the African American over the past years.
The information that the white officer that killed the unarmed black man had been charged with murder had made many feels that justice had been done. Michael T. Slager the police who was charged claimed in the case that he killed the man because he feared for his life. However, the video footage got from the scene of crime shows a different story. It is because Mr. Scot was already running when Mr. Slager drew the weapon and pulled the trigger when he was over twenty feet away.
The footage also reveals Mr. Slager handcuffing Mr. Scott then going to the point where the struggle began then picking something. The police officer then goes back to the position of the body and drops whatever he picked next to Mr. Scott. And it was not the only case of African Americans being killed; others include:
A teenager, Michael Brown was shot and killed by a police officer in Ferguson. The scenario took place after another killing, where Eric Garner an unarmed man selling cigarettes, was choked by a policeman in the area of Staten Island.
The killing of Tamir Rice who had a pellet gun sparked nationwide protests because the twelve-year-old had no confrontation with the police. Why would things like these happen in this generation after a very spirited fight to destroy racism in the country?
The answer also came this week in Ferguson. The African American population in the suburb of St. Louis has been growing from twenty-five percent in the year 1990 to about sixty-seven percent in the year 2010. With all these demographic developments, the power structure has remained over the years unchanged. By the time Brown was shot everyone in the council from the mayor to council members was white with one exception of only one black.
No black person was serving on the school board, and many of nearly over ninety percent of the police officers were white. With a population of 21000 that would not be acceptable. With such kind of unbalanced spread of power, it was likely that the blacks were more likely to be arrested, stopped and given harsher sentences than their white counterparts for the same crimes.
The ruling on the matter aimed to settle the record straight on racism tendencies. The protests about these heinous crimes have been consistent since August, and these protests shape the municipal elections. Some of the candidates join in the cause of the protesters. It is important at this point for inhabitants of this region to change the political landscape of the region to avoid a repeat of such events again and become more representative.
