Sometimes, pain relief couldn't come soon enough. Medical massage is also known as treatment message or clinical massage. It is used to treat specific problems that the patient has. They are diagnosed and then after a thorough evaluation and assessment will be administered to by a therapist.

During the Renaissance this method was widely used and in the 1850s, two physicians introduced it into the United States. During the 1930s and 40s, this method fell away because of other scientific and technological advances but was bought back in the 1970s. It was mainly used by athletes at the time to reduce muscle pain in the legs.

It is a group of symptoms and not a diagnosis of what is irritating the nerve and the symptoms can be different depending on the levels of pain and underlying causes. This pain is often described as starting in the lower back and travelling down the leg. The main cause is the pressure that is on the disc and the surrounding tissue that begins to swell.

When one is stressed a powerful neuro-chemical is released which prepares one to either flee or fight. Prolonged stress can cause many different problems and can be very damaging to one's health. Even with these stress treatments it is still up to the person to make the necessary changes to ensure a healthier lifestyle.

Myofascial massage is a treatment of the skeletal muscles. It is used to help with pain as well as to give back movement to certain muscles. The fascia is a tough, thin and elastic type of connective tissue and protects most structures within the body; this included the muscles as well. This tissue can become constrained due to trauma, overuse or immobility and will cause pain as well as muscle tension. In severe cases it is known to even reduce blood flow.

The very first time that this therapy was televised was at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. During the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics it was offered as a medical service to the United States Olympic Team. Many companies and organizations such as Reebok and the United States Department of Justice employ a therapist full time. Many well known sport athletes travel with their own personal therapists as well.

Prenatal and postnatal massages are also given to help with discomfort. It helps to revitalize and to promote strength and suppleness as well as to heighten the sense of well being. The postnatal helps with the emotional and physical relief from the stress of giving birth and helps with the purging of toxins.

Medical massages done in Japan are called Anma and also involves vigorous rubbing, shaking and kneading. It is thought to have come from China and only began about 710 CE. This technique was practiced in hospitals that were sponsored by the government.
