If you claimed yes to all three questions, it is possible you are suffering tonsilloliths, or tonsil stone. Most people always have the idea thatwhite lump on tonsil not tonsil stones can form only in the kidney. Well, it appears that they can also form in the least likely place: your tonsils. These pea-sized, calcified formations can weigh as much as 40 grams each, and may cause a considerable amount of pain to people who are susceptible to developing the stones.

The why and how of tonsil stones

It is believed that there are 2 real reasons why somebody becomes susceptible to developing tonsilloliths. The 1st risk factor is the number and depth of the creases in the tonsil region. Most members of the populace have smooth tonsils, so calcified formations like tonsil stones have a heavy time latching on to the crevices of such tonsils.

Sadly, there are some people that have extra creases in their tonsils, and these increase the risk of developing the stones as the calcified bodies have deep spaces to take root in. The second risk factor is bacteria. It is also possible the bacteria responsible for halitosis is helping enlarge the tonsil stones over a period.

The throat and tonsils many folds, so it is possible that you have tonsil stones in one of the diverse folds that can't be seen by just holding a mirror to the mouth. In such cases, a CT scan might be well placed to show where the stones are exactly.

But then again, if it is not much of an issue your ENT doctor may recommend common pain deadening techniques, eg warm salt gargles, to help manage any pain connected with the little calcified formations.

If the pain becomes too much, your ENT doctor can probably remove the tonsil stones for you without or with local pain-killer. Many tonsil stone sufferers remove the stones all alone without the aid of medical specialists.

This applies particularly to folks who have tried to remove the stones, but ended up experiencing far more agony and swelling. If you believe you would be better off without the stones, have them removed surgically. They would return it's a recurring condition of course , but till the time you will be relatively distressed free.
