It is common for plumbing problems to start right after you buy your home. The majority of the time, these problems will be in the kitchen or bathroom. Practically everyone will experience problems with their plumbing at some point in their lives. The following advice will assist you, should this situation arise.

To keep your pipes from getting frozen, always maintain a temperature in the house above freezing and make sure all pipes exposed to outside elements are insulated properly. Pipes have the potential to freeze if the surrounding temperatures are below the freezing mark. It takes time for thawing to occur so you can have water again. The worst case would be that they burst, creating water damage and a big repair bill.

Don't pay the entire plumbing bill upfront; wait until the plumber finishes the plumbing job. You may have to pay a portion of the cost before the plumber works on the job, but you should never have to pay in full until after everything has been correctly finished. It is a good thing to know the plumber did his job as he agreed to before he gets all of his money.

A great tip to use to stop your septic tank from backing up is to make sure you have it pumped at least every five years. This stop sedimentary particles from accumulating in the tank, and in the worst cases, flooding your home or making the entire system to fail. While it may cost a bit to have your septic tank pumped out, it will cost you much more to clean up any sewage backup or to repair or replace your septic tank.

If your toilet happens to be clogged, and the plunger is not working, you can pour a bucket of hot water down the toilet, but be sure to pour it from a height that is waist level or above so you do not flood the bathroom. You could repeat this process again if the water in the toilet bowl gets low.

If your home runs on well water and you notice any orange or pink stains in your fixtures or tub, this is because of iron in your water. This can be remedied by using a water softener which can be purchased at a shop, or a company can pay a visit to your home and handle the situation for you.

Try to never pour grease, fat, or any oil-based liquids into your drains. These materials may be liquid when you pour them in, but they will solidify and cause problems. As an owner of a garbage disposal, this is important because the blades will stop working if they have fat on them. Make sure you dispose of oils away from the sink.

If your pipes are clogged, and you want to try a pipe cleaner, it is suggested that you use an enzyme based cleaner. These cleaners employ helpful bacteria which process the sludge lining your pipes, and turn it to liquid. Enzyme cleaners are considered one of the best the market has.

There are two ways to remove stubborn clean-out plugs. First, try using a chisel with a hammer to get the fitting loosened. The other option is chiseling through to clean out the plug.

If water is draining into a dishwasher, it is probably because the hose attached to the sink is not installed correctly. Your hose must run in a hill pattern to avoid water mixing. Think of the St. Louis Arch -- start from your sink, go uphill with the hose, and then down before connecting to the dishwasher. This way, only pressurized water can travel through the hose. Leakage won't be an issue.

Infrequently used valves can stiffen with age and become inoperable. Clean them using penetrating oil by turning them regularly to prevent them from sticking.

It is never a good thing to be unprepared if a plumbing problem should occur. All homeowners should know the basics of plumbing. If you should face a future plumbing problem, the information you gained here will help you tackle the situation.
