You have probably landed on this article page because you are curious as to what your first or even next pet should be. This interest of course has been triggered earlier by you seeing an advertisement for Old English sheepdogs for sale. You have a mind to getting this breed, but it may be best to know more about it by reading further on in this article.

This breed is classified as a herding dog by dog societies, as it was primarily bred for this in the first place. Herding behavior can best be seen once they are around other smaller pets or even children, wherein they will try to "herd" them by circling them, poking or even nipping at them. However, this is a behavior that has been basically been bred out to this day, as most of these dogs are now raised for show purposes only.

They are a fairly large dog, and one may be mistaken that they can make guard dogs due to their ringing bark. However, this is far from the truth as they are quite polite to strangers. Their personalities in fact can have a mixture of skittishness and timidity as well, which are not traits for a guard dog.

As they are playful, especially when young, and given their size, they will need space. It is recommended that they have ample space to romp and jump around in or they can be quite destructive. Small house living or apartment living is out for this breed. They do require also at least an hour or so outdoor activity every day.

These dogs are also very strong willed and may exhibit a bit of alpha dog behavior. Thus it will require a strong willed master as well and not one who is timid. Thus you have to be confident and have a strong will also to be able to make this dog obey you. If you lack these very confident traits, then it may be hard to control this dog for you.

This dog is most well known for its long and albeit shaggy fur. Thus it will require a lot of regular grooming and also clipping. As such, the fur is prone to it attracting debris and dirt and such, especially around the chin and mouth areas. These areas are more prone to debris attraction due to this breed also being one to exhibit heavy drooling. Apart from this, this dog is also prone to flatulence, or farting.

Most of the negative personality traits in this breed can be avoided if you adopt one that is basically an adult already, for they will show their personalities outright. However, you can also get a puppy and just train out most of the negative traits with regular and intensive behavior sessions. This latter choice will take a lot of your time and money as well.

In terms of health, it will be related mostly to its heavy fur. Make sure that it is groomed regularly with daily brushing. Care should be given to trimming it short in the summer months and also to minimize hair growth around the eye area, so as not to impair vision and also to avoid irritation and infection.
